CHAPTER 15:

The bar was packed to the rafters with production crew and eager customers who were there not only for the happy hour specials but to see the filming of the television show.

The band playing that night was putting on one hell of a show. They obviously were making the most of their opportunity.

Despite her hopes that the bar’s owner would find a relief Cara found herself stuck in a stock room as the night progressed. The bartender was too busy helping to serve the customers and too unfamiliar with the coolers to be of much help as a bar back.

The music got louder as the crowd got wilder and drunker. Even in the back of the bar Cara could hear the rowdy customers screaming for someone to come on stage and perform.

“I sure hope they don’t tear the place apart. I don’t think even Jillian would be capable of smoothing that over.”

Cara paused in the task of lifting yet another case of beer off the floor. The back coolers were set to cool the alcohol very quickly so that it could then be taken to the front where the coolers would keep it at a good temperature before it got sold. It was backbreaking work and a small niggle of resentment worked its way through her.

She knew that Jillian was working hard as well, keeping the filming crew on a roll while still managing to film the scenes that would show up as backstage scenes on the episode. Knowing that Jillian was also working hard did not cool down Cara’s resentment or her irritation.

The stockroom seemed to have two temperatures; freezing right next to the coolers and sweltering everywhere else. Cara spotted a small spot right below the high and narrow window. The industrial fan blew a small runnel of breeze in that direction and there was just enough space for her to sit down on a rapidly dwindling stack of beer cases.

“I could use a break.”

Cara went to the cases. Guilt set in immediately, she had agreed to do whatever was necessary to get this episode of the show finished and everyone else was busting their asses so how could she possibly be considering literally sitting down on the job?

She brushed that guilt aside. “I’ve been lifting and stacking for hours,” she said as she took a seat on the cases. “No way am I slacking.”

She leaned against the cases directly behind her and took a deep grateful breath. The air was still too warm where she sat but the fan kept her from being too hot. Her feet, encased in the cute little shoes that she had worn to impress Jillian, throbbed painfully.

“Just my luck. I wore shoes made for sitting and I’ve been on my feet all night.”

Cara lifted one foot onto her lap, pried the shoe off and winced at the sight of her reddened and blistering big toe. Her fingers rubbed at her toes, causing blood to flow into the bruised and aching digits. It was both painful and wonderful.
